Panama is located at the border of North and South America, and the Panama Canal is an important channel connecting two oceans and two continents, known as the "World Bridge". The origin of China and Panama can be traced back to the 1850s, when about tens of thousands of Chinese people were recruited to Panama to build railways and excavate canals. Since then, Chinese people have taken root in a foreign land thousands of miles away, making great contributions to Panama's economic development and social construction. Nowadays, over 7% of the population in Panama is Chinese and overseas Chinese. Chinese businessmen are present in various industries such as real estate, finance, and supermarkets. China and Panama are also more culturally close. On November 12, 2021, the government of the Republic of Panama announced that starting from 2022, the Chinese Lunar New Year will be designated as a national holiday in Panama, and the Spring Festival celebration will be integrated into Panama's international tourism promotion plan. To commemorate the long-standing friendship between China and Panama, the "20th Chinese Day in Panama and the 170th Anniversary of Chinese Arrival" reception was held in Guangzhou on the evening of March 30th. Leonardo Alfonso Kam Binns, ambassador of Panama to China, attended the meeting in person, along with Yamileth YeLi, Consul General of Panama in Guangzhou, Liu Chenzi, Director of the Foreign Affairs Office of Guangdong Province, Johnathan Nunez, Commercial Counsellor of the Embassy of Panama in China, Liu Liu, Deputy Director of the Foreign Affairs Office of Guangzhou, Li Xiaojin, Consul General of Panama in Shanghai, Brazil, the Philippines, Thailand, Argentina Consul General and representatives from Cambodia and other countries stationed in Guangzhou, Pan Wenliang, co founder of the Panama Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and Liao Weiyang, president of the Guangdong Guangfu Cultural Industry Development Promotion Association, gathered together to celebrate this highly commemorative moment. The "Outlook New Era" magazine (hereinafter referred to as the "New Agency") was invited to attend and provide a special report on the event. Before the reception, Gan Lin, ambassador of Panama to China (middle), and Ye Mingming, Consul General of Panama to Guangzhou (second from the right) had a cordial conversation with the participants. At the reception, Consul General Ye Mingming delivered a welcome speech. She warmly welcomes the Chinese people to Panama and hopes to express her gratitude to the Chinese people on the occasion of the 170th anniversary of their arrival in Panama: "With their blood, sweat, tears, sacrifice, and hard work, they have made admirable contributions to the development of Panama." She is very excited about the current China Pakistan cooperation and also looks forward to further strengthening and deepening cooperation in various fields between the two sides, To achieve mutual benefit and win-win situation. In his speech, Director Liu Chenzi, Consul General of Panama in Guangzhou, Yamileth YeLi, mentioned that the cooperation between the two sides has continued to advance, and China has also become the second largest user of the Panama Canal. Panama, as an important global economic hub, is highly complementary to China's economy. The connection between Guangdong and Panama has a long history, and most of the first Chinese to set foot on Panama's land came from Guangdong.
