Answering the questions of the times, there is great potential for regional national studies

Disciplines and majors are the core pillar of higher education and an important carrier for cultivating morality and talent. They have a strategic, fundamental, and leading influence in higher education. In September 2022, the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council and the Ministry of Education jointly issued a new version of the Catalogue of Graduate Education Disciplines, which includes a first level discipline of "Regional Country Studies" under the newly established interdisciplinary category, which can confer degrees in economics, law, literature, and history. This has caused considerable discussion at that time. Nowadays, this directory has been officially launched, and the layout and development of regional ethnography have entered a fast lane. Why do we need regional country studies today? The establishment of the first level discipline of regional national studies is an effective response to national strategies and the needs of the times, and is also an important measure to deepen the reform of the discipline and professional system of higher education in the new era and achieve the connotative development of higher education. Since the establishment of the first batch of regional and national research and cultivation bases for universities approved by the Ministry of Education in 2012, more than 400 national and regional research filing centers of the Ministry of Education have been successively established. Country and regional research has basically achieved full coverage in various countries and regions around the world. Experts and scholars from higher education institutions and research institutes across the country have gathered together to continuously carry out theoretical innovation and practical exploration in disciplines such as foreign language and literature, history, and political science, among which there are many successful cases of interdisciplinary collaboration. National and regional research has achieved significant results in disciplinary construction, talent cultivation, consulting services, scientific research, social services, and other aspects, laying a solid foundation for the establishment of a first-class discipline in regional national studies. As a new interdisciplinary field, regional ethnography is related to the integration and transformation of knowledge systems in the three main categories of humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences. It involves the intersection, collision, integration, and linkage of concepts, methods, and tools in different disciplines and fields. Discipline and major are essentially the result of the division and combination of knowledge systems, with universal laws. China's knowledge innovation is rooted in the great practice of China's economic and social development, and the knowledge system is constantly accelerating differentiation, integration, and iteration in practice, highlighting Chinese characteristics. Regional ethnography is not a simple superposition or free combination of different disciplines, but rather a holistic transformation of research paradigms, implying revolutionary changes in organizational structure, academic traditions, and rule systems. Different disciplines need to transcend their own boundaries and perspectives, overcome either or fixed thinking patterns, learn from each other's strengths and weaknesses, and truly achieve the "fusion of perspectives" of different disciplines. In this regard, regional national studies can play the role of incubators and accelerators, guided by major issues, creating specific application scenarios, promoting interdisciplinary and interdisciplinary collaborative research, forming a strong development force, serving the diplomacy of a major country with Chinese characteristics in the new era, promoting the cultivation of composite international talents, and contributing to the construction of China's independent knowledge system. From the perspective of the development and evolution of regional country studies, after the Age of Great Navigation, regional country studies began to emerge in Europe, mainly serving the colonial expansion of a few countries; After World War II, regional country studies led by the United States emerged, mainly serving the hegemonic struggle between the United States and the West.
