It is understood that the International Dark Night Community title is awarded to a community that has made outstanding contributions to the protection of the night sky. On the premise of ensuring safe life and production, the community should scientifically transform and upgrade the lighting in the area, reduce unnecessary lighting as much as possible, integrate the concept of starry sky nature in the process of urban development, and protect the night from light pollution. Xichong is located at the southeast end of Shenzhen, approximately 60 kilometers away from the city center in a straight line. It is surrounded by mountains on three sides and faces the sea on one side, with a forest coverage rate of up to 90%. Here is the largest beach and beach in Shenzhen - Xichong Beach, as well as 8 natural villages such as Hezuo, Yashan, and Xinwu. The Shenzhen Observatory is also located here. In August 2021, the Shenzhen Meteorological Bureau, the Shenzhen Urban Management and Comprehensive Law Enforcement Bureau, and the Dapeng New Area Management Committee jointly launched the creation of dark night communities in Xichong. They jointly formulated the "Management Measures for Dark Night Community Light Environment" and "Local Standards for Dark Night Community Light Environment", carried out the improvement of community lighting quality, planned and organized multiple themed dark night activities such as astronomical observation, dark night star observation, firefly observation, and work exhibitions, Widely supported by citizens and various sectors of society. The dark night environment and ecological environment of the renovated Xichong community have been significantly improved, and the skylight background and extreme magnitude have been improved under sunny conditions. The population of fireflies has significantly increased. At present, Xichong has become a famous astronomical and stargazing destination in the Greater Bay Area of Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macao. The establishment of Xichong Dark Night Community has been supported by the National Astronomical Observatory of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Guangzhou University, the Chinese Astronomical Society, the Guangdong Astronomical Society and other units and organizations.
