Magnetic reconnection of solar small-scale oscillation promotes the formation of filaments

2023-02-28

The reporter learned from the Chinese Academy of Sciences Yunnan Observatory on the 27th that the Fuxian Lake Solar Observation and Research Base of the observatory cooperated with relevant personnel of Yunnan Normal University, and found that the small-scale oscillation magnetic reconnection on the sun can promote the formation of the middle filament through observation. The research results were published in the International Astronomical Journal of Astrophysics. Magnetic reconnection is a physical process that converts magnetic energy into kinetic energy and heat energy. Many observational evidences about magnetic reconnection have been reported, such as current sheet, plasma inflow and outflow, etc. However, there are very few direct observations of the formation of filaments caused by magnetic reconnection. The researchers analyzed the complete process of the formation of filaments caused by small-scale magnetic reconnection in the active region 12765 on June 5, 2020, and found that the filaments and the surrounding magnetic rings were close to each other, and then magnetic reconnection occurred between them and formed current sheets. The directions of the current sheets formed successively were perpendicular to each other. This magnetic reconnection is called oscillatory magnetic reconnection. Among them, intermittent small-scale magnetic reconnection occurs in the north of the filament, and small-scale magnetic reconnection shows the characteristics of oscillatory reconnection. In the process of magnetic reconnection, a large amount of material is continuously injected into the filament channel. The researchers calculated the speed, mass and kinetic energy of the material entering the filament, and found that the mass of the material entering the filament was very consistent with the estimated mass of the filament. During the observation period, 53 material injections occurred, with an average speed of about 57 km/s and a total mass of about 7.39 × 10 ^ 14 g, the total kinetic energy released by magnetic reconnection is about 3.09 × 10 ^ 21 joules. The results show that due to small-scale magnetic reconnection, the plasma is finally injected into the filament, resulting in the formation of the filament. (Xinhua News Agency)
