Musical children's play Luduan: Let cultural relics "live" through the power of drama

2023-02-09

In the past Lantern Festival, the musical children's play "Luduan" jointly produced by the Palace Museum and Yiruiqi International Culture Co., Ltd. ended in the National Grand Theater. Based on the auspicious beast "Luduan" in the Forbidden City, the play tells a series of interesting and touching stories between the protagonist Xiaoluduan and his family members of cultural relics, as well as between Gao Xiaoduan, the Palace History Department of the Forbidden City, and his grandson Gao Xiaoduan. In September 2022, the play was premiered at the Central Opera House, creating a hot scene of "sold out when the tickets are opened". In this year's CCTV Spring Festival Gala's "When the" Divine Beast "Meets the Divine Beast" program, the divine beast Xiaoluduan from the Palace Museum attracted attention and won the love of many viewers. After watching the play, the small audience said: "I saw the live cultural relics on the stage for the first time, and I like them very much." The parents said: "I felt the beauty of the Forbidden City that I have never seen before on the stage, the children immersed in it, learned the knowledge that is difficult to learn on campus, and also received a good education about time and life." Some audiences believed that the play is a rare children's play worth watching together. Luduan is a unicorn in ancient Chinese myths and legends. It is described as a auspicious beast that can travel ten thousand miles a day and eight thousand miles a night in the Book of Songs. It is a healthy and upward sportsman in the hearts of parents and children, a model for learning about multiculturalism and positive character of self-confidence, and an embodiment of self-confidence and self-improvement of traditional Chinese culture. The musical children's play "Luduan" is based on the filigree enamel Luduan incense stored in the Palace Museum during the Wanli period of the Ming Dynasty. It creates a well-informed, open and inclusive protagonist Xiaoluduan for small audiences. In addition to Luduan, Ming Wanli filigree enamel Luduan aromatherapy, Qing Qianlong Jinou Yonggu cup, Shen Zifan's tapestry magpie of the Southern Song Dynasty, and Cao Li calligraphy works of Lu Ji, a calligrapher of the Jin Dynasty... These pieces of treasures handed down from more than 1860000 pieces (sets) of the Palace Museum are transformed into lively and lovely character images in the play, leading the audience to enter history and have a dialogue with ancient cultural relics beyond time and space. This play is the first original children's play produced by the Palace Museum. At the beginning of its creation, the Palace Museum sent a strong lineup of cultural relics experts to escort this children's play. From artifacts to paintings and calligraphy, cultural relics experts provide cultural consultant support throughout the process. Yan Hongbin, the chief planner of the program of Luduan, said that he hoped that this children's play, which integrates taste, education, communication and cultural inheritance functions, could help children to know more cultural relics, actively understand the excellent traditional Chinese culture behind it, and then absorb the valuable nutrients contained in the cultural treasures, integrate and innovate, so as to better inherit it. Ouyang Yibing, a playwright and drama critic, gave a pertinent evaluation of the play. He believes that the creation and arrangement of this play is not only an attempt made by the Forbidden City in cultural communication, but also an attempt to combine the traditional national culture with the cultural needs of contemporary teenagers. The creation and arrangement of Luduan well expresses the contemporary spirit of the Forbidden City. In the view of experts and scholars, the creation and arrangement of the play combines museum education with children's drama education. In the context of the museum's thick history and culture
