Integration of science and education: practice and challenge of European University of Applied Sciences

2023-01-19

Since the late 1960s, many European countries have established a number of higher education institutions in addition to traditional universities by upgrading and building new ones to provide professional skills education and serve the needs of regional labor market and individual employment. For such institutions, different countries have different names, but the English name is gradually unified as the University of Applied Sciences. 1. The driving force of scientific research demand has just begun. The main function of the University of Applied Sciences is teaching. However, with its development, scientific research has become more and more important and has become an important task for teachers in addition to teaching. The rise of the scientific research function of the European University of Applied Sciences has a common driving factor: on the one hand, it is the need to serve the knowledge economy, regional innovation and the needs of small and medium-sized enterprises. The increasing international competition has put forward higher requirements for quality and productivity, and the demand for innovation is also increasing. Compared with the deficiencies of traditional comprehensive universities in applied research achievements, the University of Applied Sciences is considered more likely to bridge the intellectual and technological gap between academia and practice because of its close relationship with industry, regions and groups. Carrying out scientific research can help the University of Applied Sciences establish a cooperation network with its environment, deliver scientific research results to regional, local groups and small and medium-sized enterprises, accelerate the application and value-added of knowledge, creatively solve the challenges faced by the industry or region, and then make contributions to the development of economic society. On the other hand, it serves the needs of students' ability growth and employment. Carrying out scientific research can help teachers of the University of Applied Sciences improve their professional skills, innovate the content of courses or create new courses, guide students to respond to changing social needs and increase employment opportunities. At the same time, allowing students to participate in application-oriented scientific research will help cultivate students' ability to analyze and solve problems, and the ability to "break the casserole and ask the bottom", and constantly reflect on their own paths, methods and solutions to become "reflective practitioners", which is particularly important for students to continue to improve their work in the future and adapt to the increasingly competitive society. Most European universities of applied science attach importance to the above two aspects at the same time, and some universities will focus on one aspect. However, it is worth noting that although the emphasis of the two aspects is different, it does not mean that the two aspects are contradictory, but can coordinate and support each other. It can be seen that it has become an important mission of the European University of Applied Sciences to link professional practice and education through innovative scientific research and promote the integration of science and education. 2. What kind of people need to be trained in applied science? The European University of Applied Sciences has adopted different methods on how to build the relationship between scientific research and teaching and promote the integration of science and education. The Network Alliance of European Universities of Applied Sciences summarized four types of science and education integration. Among them, the most commonly used method is research-based, that is, students learn by doing research, such as acting as research project assistants, writing papers, etc; The second is the research-tutored method, which mainly emphasizes paper writing; The third is the research-led method, that is, teaching and learning focus on the practical questions of some disciplines or professional fields
