High bandwidth and low latency are critical for computing networks

2022-12-09

As an important infrastructure for carrying information and data, computing network has become an important cornerstone of the digital transformation of the whole society. Data from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology shows that in 2021, the scale of China's core computing industry will reach 1.5 trillion yuan. The development level of computing power has been gradually improved, laying a solid foundation for the development of the digital economy. From December 8 to 10, the 2022 China Computer Conference (CNCC) was held online. On the first conference forum held on August 8, around the theme of "From grid to computing power network: experience, challenges and prospects", many academicians directly presented their views and answered questions on the spot. "My personal view is that there is no need to discuss whether to do it or not, but how to do it, because whether to do it is a false proposition." Gao Wen, a professor of Peking University and the director of Pengcheng Laboratory, said frankly that at present, the computing network faces two problems. In addition to how to package and transport computing resources, the other challenge is delay. In particular, the "east to west computing" project, whether the bandwidth is wide enough and whether the delay is low is critical. "How low the delay is? Basically, it is the speed of light, and the point-to-point connection is the speed of light, which is the low delay." What bold attempts does Pengcheng Lab have in the connection of nodes between different computing power centers? In response to the questions raised by the host, Gao Wen said that Pengcheng Laboratory was trying to implement the multi-core optical fiber direct connection scheme. "Nowadays, optical fibers are all single cores. One core is wrapped with a protective layer, and many single cores are finally bundled into a large bundle to make optical fibers. This is not only expensive, but also cumbersome. There are many protective measures in the middle." He said that the team is trying to bundle 4 cores or 7 cores into one package, which can easily achieve large bandwidth. Speaking of the problem of low delay, Gawain explained that the delay of many network connections is due to the delay of optical fiber, which is 300 kilometers per millisecond in vacuum and 200 kilometers per millisecond in optical fiber (the speed is reduced by about 1/3 due to glass refraction in optical fiber). In addition, there are delays in intermediate routing and forwarding caused by software processing time. "Another exploratory project we are working on is that the optical fiber is hollow. If the speed of light propagation in vacuum is 300 kilometers per millisecond, it can increase the speed of 100 kilometers per millisecond compared with the current ordinary optical fiber. This is the goal of our current efforts." Gao Wen said that despite the challenges, "I hope there will be results in two or three years." In the opinion of Academician Sun Ninghui, a researcher of the Institute of Computing Technology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Internet should avoid new bottles of old wine, and should not be regarded as the largest basket of technologies and scenes. "I understand that the most difficult thing for CALiNet in academia is how to serve CALiNet." He then put forward the view that now, both cloud computing and supercomputing are billed by quantity, can they be billed by quality? Hui Tao, vice president of Huawei's computing product line, called on the industry to strengthen cooperation, jointly explore the application scenarios of computing network, build computing network standards, promote key technology innovation, promote the establishment of laws and regulations related to computing network, and promote the healthy development of computing network.
