China has successfully built a deep-sea in-situ spectroscopy laboratory in the South China Sea

2022-12-07

The reporter learned from the Institute of Oceanology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences that the scientific research team of the Institute has successfully developed the world's first deep-sea multi-channel Raman insertion probes system (Multi RiPs), and has successfully built a deep-sea in-situ spectroscopy laboratory in the cold spring region of the South China Sea. After years of research and development, the scientific research team of the Institute of Oceanology, Chinese Academy of Sciences has developed the world's first deep-sea multi-channel Raman spectrum detection system. This system can detect the main chemical components of substances in the extreme environment of the deep sea through the spectrum generated by laser, such as detecting the structure and composition of combustible ice, and capture its relevant dynamic laws and potential links. On this basis, the scientific research team has successfully built the first deep-sea in-situ spectroscopy laboratory in the South China Sea. The laboratory is an unmanned laboratory, which is equivalent to moving the ground laboratory to the seabed. It can conduct normal operation in deep-sea cold springs, hydrothermal and other areas, and carry out long-term, continuous, multi-point seabed observation, data collection and controllable experiments. It can be used to study the impact of deep-sea hydrothermal solutions, cold springs, etc. on marine ecology and global climate change, and can be used to explore scientific hypotheses such as whether life originated from the ocean. According to Zhang Xin, a researcher at the Institute of Oceanology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the unmanned laboratory system can withstand a maximum seabed pressure of 4500 meters, covering most of the South China Sea. In the future, it can be deployed in deep-sea hydrothermal areas to study sulphides and minerals in the deep sea. These resources may be strategic metal resources in the future. This system can conduct relevant in-situ tests and researches on the formation and evolution process and mechanism of these substances. △ Layout of key optical components of multi-channel Raman spectrum detection system △ Schematic diagram of Mulit iPs carrying LOOP for in-situ experiment and long-term continuous detection of multi-target in hydrothermal area △ Schematic diagram of Mulit iPs carrying LOOP for in-situ experiment and long-term continuous detection of multi-target in cold spring area △ Schematic diagram of Mulit iPs carrying LOOP for three consecutive years (a: 2020; b: 2021; c: 2022) Placed in the cold spring area in the northern South China Sea to carry out deep-sea in-situ long-term observation and field experiment (Liaoxin News Agency)
