China is taking action to protect biodiversity

2022-12-06

On December 7, the second phase of the fifteenth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP15) will be opened in Montreal, Canada, where the Convention secretariat is located. China will continue to lead the substantive and political affairs of the Conference as the presidency. Looking back on the first phase of the meeting, we have achieved fruitful results. We not only reached the Kunming Declaration, but also made important initiatives such as the establishment of the first batch of national parks. As an innovative measure of biodiversity conservation in China, how effective are our national parks? As a country rich in biodiversity, what other efforts has China made in recent years to protect the Earth's life community? In October 2021, the first phase of the fifteenth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity was held in Kunming, China. At the meeting, China announced the establishment of the first five national parks, including Sanjiangyuan and Giant Panda, and the establishment of the Kunming Biodiversity Fund. This series of pragmatic host country initiatives injected impetus into the global biodiversity governance process. Cui Shuhong, Director of the Department of Natural Ecology Protection of the Ministry of Ecology and Environment, said that the Kunming Declaration laid a political foundation and pointed out the direction for the formulation of the "post-2020 global biodiversity framework". The first batch of five national parks has been officially announced to the public, and Beijing and Guangzhou National Botanical Gardens have been listed and officially opened to the public. In terms of mainstreaming the top-level design of biodiversity conservation, it should be said that in the past year, the pace was very solid and the results were very significant. In the Smart Rainforest Center of Hainan Tropical Rainforest National Park, the intelligent monitoring system observes the activities of wild animals in the park all day long. Hainan Tropical Rainforest National Park is one of the first five national parks announced by China at the first phase of COP15 last year. The park involves nine cities and counties, a total of 4269 square kilometers, integrating 20 original nature reserves. Wang Nan, Deputy Director of Hainan Tropical Rainforest National Park Administration: In history, we have carried out some logging, which has led to the destruction and degradation of the ecosystem. Therefore, based on these considerations, such a national park has been integrated and set up on one eighth of Hainan Island, mainly to protect the tropical rainforest ecosystem, as well as key rare and endangered wildlife such as Hainan gibbon. Every morning, the gibbon monitoring team in Hainan Tropical Rainforest National Park will follow the call of gibbons to find their activity location, and monitor and record their lives. On April 12 this year, the park administration announced that another baby ape was born in Hainan gibbon group D. Wang Jichao, Vice President of Hainan Tropical Rainforest National Park Research Institute: In terms of Hainan gibbon, new baby apes have been born in recent years, which indicates that the population dynamics are evolving in a good direction. Hainan gibbon is a national first-class protected wild animal, which has been listed in the "critically endangered" species list by the World Conservation Union. At present, there are only 36 gibbons in 5 groups. At the end of 1970s, the population of Hainan gibbon once dropped to 7-9 in two groups. This species was even once suspected of being extinct. Wang Jichao, Vice President of Hainan Tropical Rainforest National Park Research Institute:
