China sternly rebuts the Pentagon report: the US seeks excuses for expanding its nuclear arsenal

On November 29 local time, the Pentagon of the United States released the 2022 China Military and Security Development Report, or the "China Military Power Report". This 196 page report makes wild guesses and comments on China's military modernization. The report claims that China plans to "build a world-class military by 2049" and "is challenging the United States militarily by expanding its nuclear warhead reserves and other means". The report also speculates that China currently has more than 400 nuclear bombs and will have about 1500 nuclear bombs in 2035. In this regard, the experts interviewed by the Global Times pointed out that China is the only nuclear country in the world that insists on not using nuclear weapons first, and the United States not only uses nuclear weapons first, but also uses its own nuclear weapons to provide a nuclear umbrella for its allies. The United States is the source of the future nuclear danger. On November 30, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian said at a press conference that the US side has repeatedly hyped various versions of the "China threat theory" in recent years, which is just to find excuses for expanding its nuclear arsenal and maintaining military hegemony. This is a common tactic of the US side, and the world can see it clearly. The US report says that China's nuclear weapons development is "accelerating". "The Pentagon's military strength report shows that China's current nuclear warhead reserves have exceeded 400, and the US's previous estimate is only a small part of this figure." According to CNN, in 2020, the United States estimated that the number of nuclear warheads in China would be about 200, and this number is expected to double in 10 years. However, according to the 2022 "China's military strength report" released by the Pentagon on Tuesday, only two years later, China has reached this goal, and "if China continues to increase its nuclear weapons reserves at the current rate, it will have about 1500 nuclear warheads by 2035". According to the report, a senior official of the US Department of Defense, when introducing the report at the same day's press conference, said that Beijing was "focusing on accelerating nuclear expansion and trying to challenge the US as the world's number one superpower". He said, "We have seen this accelerated expansion in the past few years... This constitutes the most important and systematic challenge to the national security of the United States.". This report highlights the modernization of China's missile technology. According to the report, Beijing is working hard to modernize its ballistic missiles. It has conducted about 135 missile tests in 2021, "exceeding the total missile tests in other regions of the world (excluding missiles launched in conflicts)". CNN said that in 2021, China also successfully tested a new hypersonic missile, which flew around the whole earth before hitting the target. "This achievement has aroused people's concern about the backward development of American hypersonic weapons". The report also hyped up other aspects of China's military development. The report claims that Beijing plans to build a "world-class army" in 2049. At present, China has the world's largest navy, with 340 warships and submarines, and the world's third largest and largest regional air force, with more than 2800 military aircraft. AFP quoted the report as saying that the Chinese air force "is rapidly catching up with the West
