On the Author of Weeding Day in the Noon

2022-11-21

"At the noon of the weeding day, the sweat drips down the soil. However, every grain is hard to eat." More than ten years ago, there was a copyright dispute in this famous poem of compassion for farmers, which was included in the textbooks of primary and secondary schools. It turned out that this poem, which was attributed to Li Shen of the Tang Dynasty, was suddenly found in the "All Tang Poems" compiled by the people of the Qing Dynasty. And after being included under the name of Nie Yizhong, it was also noted with "This is a poem by Li Shen". This discovery made the poem, which was already "unknown concubine" in the Qing Dynasty, rise again to dispute. As a result, Nie Yizhong seems to have the upper hand. Scholars who advocate Nie Yizhong's works cite the following reasons: First, the Song printed edition Quanfang Prepares for the Ancestor did not include this poem in the name of Li Shen, but in Nie Yizhong's name. Secondly, according to Nie Yizhong's statement in the Tang Poetry Chronicle, which was written by Song people, that he was "struggling with the grass, ready to taste the bitter Chu, especially the poor", Nie Yizhong was born in poverty, and later only served as a county magistrate. From this, Nie Yizhong was able to understand the sufferings of the people. Third, a quarter of Nie Yizhong's poems collected in the Complete Tang Poems describe farmers' life and rural scenes. To sum up the above reasons, it is concluded that the copyright of this poem belongs to Nie Yizhong. However, the above reasons are not sufficient. The first reason can only explain that the author of this poem had already appeared in the Song Dynasty. The second and third reasons can only be regarded as circumstantial evidence at most. Therefore, the above three reasons are not enough to deny Li Shen's copyright in this poem. Due to the great doubt, the author re examined the ancient books and records. Indeed, in addition to the two poems in the Complete Tang Poems, Volume 103 of the Imperial Review of the Past Dynasties and Volume 29 of the Imperial Review of the Classics and History Handout of the Qing Dynasty all have the records of the Ming Emperor Xuanzong's "chanting Nie Yi's poem", which seems to be a supplement to Nie's author. However, the records of Tang poetry in the Song Dynasty and the Ming Dynasty are late. It is important to examine how Tang people recorded them. On the volume of the Tang Dynasty's Fan Shu's "Yunxi Friendship Conference", the author found a record about this poem: Li Xianggong, the gentry, supervised Daliang Ri, and four soldiers marched into the town's navy At the beginning, Li Gong went to recommend him. He tried to learn about Lu Guanghua by using the ancient style. Wen called Wei Xu, a member of the Qi Dynasty, and his younger brother Gong Yue. When I saw the literature of Li 20 scholars, I thought he would be the prime minister. As it is said. The poem said, "If you plant a grain of millet in spring and harvest ten thousand seeds in autumn, there will be no idle land everywhere, and the farmer will still starve to death.". Weeding day at noon, sweat drops under the soil; Who knows that every meal is hard. The ancient customs mentioned here and the two poems included here are exactly the two ancient customs included in the Complete Tang Poetry. In addition, Yunxi Youyi clearly recorded that these two poems were the works of Li Shen before he ascended the Scholarship Hall. In addition, He Guangyuan, who went to the Five Dynasties after the Tang Dynasty, also recorded in Volume 8 of the Apocalypse Record that Li Xianggong's gentry had hurt the farmers, and Zheng Zhengjun's successor, Yun Sen, was not good or bad. Li Gongshi said, "In the afternoon of hoeing, sweat drips down the grain;"; It is hard to eat every meal on the plate. Zheng Junshi said, "A grain of red millet rice, a few painful cows getting blood, and people under the coral tree, holding cups and vomiting constantly.". Except for some differences between the quoted poems and the current version, there is no objection from the author. It is clearly referred to as Li Shen. In the documents of the Song Dynasty, compiled in the early Northern Song Dynasty
