"Songsha Relics -- Special Exhibition of Dunhuang Documents in Tianjin Museum" is launched today

2022-11-21

"Songsha Relics - Special Exhibition of Dunhuang Documents in Tianjin Museum" was held in Tianjin Museum on the morning of 20th. There are more than 70 pieces (sets) of exhibits in this exhibition, including 3 first-class cultural relics and 11 second-class cultural relics. Of the 35 Dunhuang documents on display, 14 are on display for the first time. In terms of the scale of exhibits, this exhibition is the largest and richest Dunhuang literature exhibition in Tianjin so far. It is understood that the three first-class cultural relics on display this time are the Lotus Sutra Volume IV (Tang Dynasty), the Divine Mantra Volume II (Tang Dynasty), and the Nirvana Sutra Volume XVII (Sui Dynasty). This exhibition is divided into five units: "Preface · Yaojin", "Relics", "Integration", "Writing" and "Human". Among them, the "Sequence · Main Place" unit organizes exhibits in the order of "Silk Road → Dunhuang → Mogao Grottoes → Sutra Cave → Dunhuang Documents". The unit of "Heritage Treasures" starts from the spread of Dunhuang documents, focusing on the efforts of patriotic collectors Mr. Zhou Shutao and Mr. Zhang Shucheng in Tianjin to save this batch of precious cultural heritage. The "Ronghui" unit aims to briefly present to the audience the comprehensive content and extremely diverse cultural attributes of Dunhuang literature. The "Writing" unit starts from the perspective of writing skills to guide the audience to understand the writing level of the ancients more intuitively and comprehensively. The "human" unit tries to lead the audience directly "through" the secular society back to Dunhuang by digging the stories behind the Dunhuang documents. Zhang Xia, curator of Tianjin Museum, said in an interview: "This' Special Exhibition of Dunhuang Documents' has been planned, prepared and shared for two years. The displayed Dunhuang documents are also carefully selected from more than 300 collections. In particular, 14 exhibits are on display for the first time. Since these Dunhuang documents have a history of thousands of years, it is quite difficult to hold such a document exhibition from the perspective of paper cultural relics protection." It is reported that this exhibition introduces the light and shadow immersion interactive display technology of Dunhuang Grottoes and documents from Tianjin Academy of Fine Arts while displaying the cultural relics in the museum collection. This technology shows the collision between the millennium Dunhuang art and contemporary civilization with an 8K ultra high-definition video effect experience panorama, realizing a diversified dialogue between innovative media art and oriental aesthetics. In this "digital exhibition hall", the audience can experience the Dunhuang culture presented by means of virtual reality, interactive art and other scientific and artistic means. Mr. Guo, who accompanied the children to the exhibition, said: "There are many scientific and technological elements in this exhibition. It's very special to experience Dunhuang culture in an immersive way. The purpose of bringing the children here is to let them learn more extracurricular knowledge." "I really like the word with lightning in the circle. I've never seen it before. It's very special." The children under 10 said excitedly. It is understood that Dunhuang was a dazzling pearl on the ancient land Silk Road, and the world-famous Dunhuang documents came from here. Thanks to Tianjin's special position in modern history, as well as the generous donations made by patriotic collectors for the public and the hard work of cultural and museum personnel of past dynasties, Tianjin Museum has become an important unit to protect, study and display the lost Dunhuang documents. Its collection of more than 300 Dunhuang documents helps us understand East Asia and even Central Asia from the 4th to the 11th century
