Two Chinese candidates were elected to the United Nations Appeals Tribunal and the Dispute Tribunal. On the 15th of the 77th United Nations General Assembly, the judges of the United Nations Appeals Tribunal and the Dispute Tribunal were elected. Gao Xiaoli and Sun Xiangzhuang, judges from the Supreme People's Court of China, were elected to the United Nations Appeals Tribunal and the United Nations Dispute Tribunal, respectively, upon the recommendation of the United Nations Internal Judicial Council. According to reports, Gao Xiaoli's term of office is from November 15, 2022 to June 30, 2026, and Sun Xiangzhuang's term of office is from July 1, 2023 to June 30, 2030. The United Nations Appeals Tribunal has seven judges, all of whom are based at United Nations Headquarters in New York. The Dispute Tribunal has nine judges, who work in New York, Geneva and Nairobi respectively. The two Tribunals are important organs of the internal judicial system of the United Nations and play an important role in safeguarding the legitimate rights and interests of United Nations staff and promoting the effective functioning of the United Nations system on the basis of the rule of law.
