Witness China's ecological "code" and enlighten the world from the beauty of wetlands

2022-11-09

From the model of integrating wetland protection into urban development - Wuhan East Lake and Qingshan River Beach, to the three river sources of the "Chinese Water Tower" that maintain the ecological barrier of the Qinghai Tibet Plateau, to the safe home of migratory birds, Poyang Lake... The beauty of wetlands has become a business card of beautiful China. On the 6th, the ministerial high-level meeting of the 14th Conference of the Parties to the Wetlands Convention formally adopted the "Wuhan Declaration", demonstrating the global will to jointly protect the "kidney of the earth" and declaring to the world China's determination to promote high-quality development of wetland conservation. Many experts and scholars said that behind China's historic achievements in wetland protection is the Chinese style ecological "code" that promotes green development and ecological civilization, providing a path and experience for global ecological environment governance. Protecting the beauty of China's wetlands is not only an important means to maintain biodiversity and cope with climate change, but also a beautiful interpretation and vivid practice of China's protection of "green mountains and green waters". In 1992, China formally acceded to the Wetlands Convention, becoming the 67th contracting party. Over the past 30 years, China has created a number of wetland "business cards" with international influence step by step. According to the State Forestry and Grassland Administration of China, more than 800000 hectares of wetlands have been added and repaired in China in the past decade. There are currently 64 wetlands of international importance. China has 13 places selected as "International Wetland Cities", which is the largest number of countries selected as "International Wetland Cities" in the world. With 4% of the world's wetlands, China has met the needs of one fifth of the world's population for wetland production, life, ecology and culture. Balash Dorst, a scholar at Marmara University in Türkiye, said that as a party to the Wetlands Convention, the wetlands that China has restored, repaired and added in the past decade are remarkable achievements in terms of both area and scale, and set an example for other developing countries. Since its accession to the Wetlands Convention, China has conscientiously fulfilled its responsibilities under the Convention, actively participated in international exchanges, cooperated extensively with all parties, and conducted training for wetland managers in 42 developing countries. After the adoption of the Wuhan Declaration, Mu Songda Momba, Secretary General of the Wetlands Convention, said: "30 years is not short, and we have witnessed China's leadership in wetland protection. From China's achievements in wetland protection, goals set up and wetland management methods in the past 30 years, we can learn a lot, not only scientific methods, but also spatial layout plans and legislative frameworks. Relevant experience will help promote the formation of joint forces around the world." The Chinese path wetland for wetland protection was called "sou", "ze" and "sea" in ancient China. The poem "Guan Guan Ju Jiu, on the Island of the River" in the Book of Songs depicts the wetland scenery, which reflects the ancient Chinese people's poetic view of wetlands. The mulberry based fish ponds, sugarcane based fish ponds and other traditional Chinese wetland conservation and utilization methods with a long history are still glowing. In recent years, China has upgraded wetland protection to a national strategy, gradually established and improved the legal system for wetland protection, improved wetland protection management, investigation and monitoring systems, enhanced scientific and technological support, and created a path for wetland protection and development that can be used for reference by the world.
