How many "big cities" are there in China? Which cities have just joined the ranks, and which cities are about to enter? Recently, the Office of the Seventh National Population Census Leading Group of the State Council released the 2020 China Population Census Data by County (hereinafter referred to as "Data by County"), showing a "schedule" for China's new urbanization. According to the Data by County, there are 105 big cities in China according to the current standard of city size. According to the National Bureau of Statistics, 105 urban areas have a population of more than one million. By the end of 2021, there are 691 cities in China, including 297 cities above prefecture level and 394 county-level cities. How many of them can be called "big cities"? According to the city size classification standard issued by the State Council in 2014, the city type is divided according to the urban permanent population. Among them, cities with more than 10 million permanent residents in urban areas are megacities, cities with more than 5 million but less than 10 million are megacities, cities with more than 3 million but less than 5 million are Type I megacities, and cities with more than 1 million but less than 3 million are Type II megacities. These cities are all big cities. With the continuous acceleration of new urbanization, more and more cities have become big cities. According to the Data by County, there are 105 large cities in China, including 7 mega cities, 14 mega cities, 14 Type I cities and 70 Type II cities. Shanghai, Beijing and Shenzhen, three mega cities, ranked among the top three, with urban population of 19.873 million, 17.752 million and 17.438 million respectively. According to the distribution, the eastern region has the largest number of big cities, 54 in total; There are 21 in the central region and 21 in the western region, and 10 in the northeast region. In all provinces, 30 provinces, autonomous regions and cities in China, except Tibet Autonomous Region, have large cities; Jiangsu Province has the largest number, with 11 big cities, 10 in Guangdong Province and 10 in Shandong Province. Experts analyze that the population growth of big cities in recent years mainly comes from population migration, rather than natural population growth. According to the data of the National Bureau of Statistics, China's population mobility is increasingly active. In 2020, the country's floating population will reach 376 million, accounting for 26.6% of the country's population. From 2010 to 2020, the population concentration of major urban agglomerations will increase, and the population of Guangdong Hong Kong Macao Greater Bay Area urban agglomerations, Yangtze River Delta urban agglomerations and Chengdu Chongqing urban agglomerations will increase by 35%, 12% and 7.3% respectively. In terms of the registered residence system, the restrictions on settlement in cities with a permanent population of less than 3 million in urban areas were basically lifted, and the conditions for settlement in cities with a permanent population of more than 3 million in urban areas were orderly relaxed, further promoting the citizenization of agricultural transfer population. Economic development has also promoted the formation of big cities. From the list of 105 big cities, Jiangsu, Guangdong and Shandong, the three provinces with the largest number of big cities, also rank among the top in terms of regional GDP in the country. The ranking of permanent residents in urban areas in the Data by County also closely coincides with the ranking of national urban regional GDP in 2021. The driving and radiating effects of big cities are increasingly prominent. According to the person in charge of the National Bureau of Statistics, at present, China has generally established "19+2", which includes 19 urban agglomerations and 2 urban agglomerations
