It is reported that in the field of marine oil and gas exploration, the water area with a depth of more than 300 meters is generally referred to as deep water, and the well with a depth of more than 3500 meters is defined as deep well. The Baodao 21-1 Gas Field discovered this time is located in the deep-water area in the southeast sea area of Hainan. The maximum operating water depth exceeds 1500 meters, and the completed drilling depth exceeds 5000 meters. It is about 150 kilometers away from the "Deepwater No.1" atmospheric field. The successful discovery of Baodao 21-1 shows that China has made an important breakthrough in deep water exploration technology, which is of great guiding significance to the exploration of similar strata. According to the overall planning of CNOOC, by 2025, China's Yinggehai, Qiongdongnan and Pearl River Mouth basins will have an overall proven natural gas reserve of 1 trillion cubic meters, and a "trillion cubic meter atmospheric area" will be built.
