Ensuring Food Security: China Shows Its Responsibility as a Great Power

2022-10-19

Food is stable and the world is safe. October 16 is World Food Day, and its week is also China's Food Security Publicity Week. How to view the current global food security risks? How can China continue to ensure food security? These are topics of concern at home and abroad. This year, the world food security situation is not optimistic. The impact of the COVID-19 has not yet ended, and regional conflicts, climate change, grain price fluctuations, energy and fertilizer prices and other factors have impacted the global food industry chain and supply chain. The United Nations, the world bank and other international institutions have warned one after another that "the situation is moving from bad to worse" and that the world may face "the most serious humanitarian crisis after World War II". Food security is critical to human survival and the healthy operation of the world economy. In the face of severe challenges, countries in particular need to work together to safeguard international food security. However, individual countries not only do not want to relieve the world's worries, but also "pour oil into the fire" the crisis in Ukraine, taking unilateral restrictions to further aggravate the global food crisis, and taking the opportunity to drive up food prices to profit from it. In contrast, as a responsible big country, China has actively contributed to alleviating the world food crisis and demonstrated its responsibility as a big country to ensure food security through practical actions. This responsibility is reflected in China's efforts to capture a bumper grain harvest. Since the beginning of this year, China's grain production has been breaking through one after another. Looking at the summer grain, the rare autumn flood last year caused 1/3 of the winter wheat to be late sown and grow complicatedly; Looking at early rice, the continuous low temperature and overcast rain combined with the increase in the price of agricultural materials will bring adverse effects; Looking at the autumn grain, the southern region has experienced the longest duration, the widest range of influence, and the highest average intensity of high temperature and little rain since 1961. Despite the difficulties, the whole country overcame them, the central government gave more support, agricultural technicians rushed to the fields, hundreds of millions of farmers worked hard, and finally increased the yield of summer grain and early rice. At present, the national autumn grain harvest has entered a peak period, with an obvious trend of increasing production. The annual grain output is expected to remain above 1.3 trillion kg, laying a solid foundation for stabilizing China's rice bowl, and providing strong support for stabilizing the world food market and global food supply. This responsibility is reflected in China's continuous improvement of food security. As the most populous country in the world, China has always made it a top priority to solve the problem of eating well. Since the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, China's grain output has climbed to a high level, exceeding 1.3 trillion kg for seven consecutive years, and the per capita grain output has remained stable at more than 450 kg, higher than the internationally recognized 400 kg food security line. Through hard work, China has used less than 9% of the world's arable land to produce about 1/4 of the world's food and has solved the problem of feeding about 1/5 of the world's population, which in itself is a major contribution to world food security. Bubaker Ben Belhassan, Director of the Market and Trade Department of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, praised that China's practice is of great help to the global realization of the goal of sustainable development to eradicate poverty and hunger. This responsibility is reflected in China's joint efforts with other countries to ensure global food security. The Chinese people not only firmly hold their jobs in their own hands, but also actively participate in international development cooperation and global governance on food security. The global development initiative proposed by the Chinese side regards food security as one of the eight key areas of cooperation
