Ultra thin and breathable, can measure and process biological signals for a long time, and the first grid structure nano electronic skin is available

The research team of the Daegu Gyeongbei Academy of Science and Technology (DGIST) in South Korea has successfully developed the world's first nanostructure electronic skin device (field-effect transistor). This electronic skin device contains only a nano mesh structure, which can measure and process biological signals for a long time without making the wearer feel uncomfortable. This achievement marks a big step forward for scientists towards the integrated system of electronic skin devices. Relevant research was published in the latest issue of Advanced Functional Materials. (Image source: Physicists' Organization Network) Electronic skin refers to an electronic wearable device attached to the skin, which is used to collect biological signals such as temperature, heart rate, electromyography and blood pressure, and transmit data. In order to use real-time medical system to accurately measure physiological signals, a soft sensor that can be connected to smooth and constantly moving skin surface is required. Therefore, most electronic devices used for skin surface are made of flat surface substrates such as plastic and rubber. However, although the surface of this matrix material is flat, its water permeability and air permeability are poor, and long-term adhesion to the skin may lead to unexpected diseases, such as allergy and metabolic disorder. Therefore, electronic devices in contact with biological tissues must have high permeability to ensure long-term use. In view of this, the research on polymer nanofiber based nano grid devices with good air permeability has attracted much attention. However, due to the rough surface, lack of mechanical stability, thermal stability and chemical stability, it is difficult for scientists to manufacture nano grid transistors. In this study, the DGIST team used polychlorinated paraxylene as a biocompatible coating to solve these problems and successfully developed the world's first ultra-thin breathable nano organic field effect transistor (OFET) that can be used in electronic skin devices. This ultra-thin nano grid OFET will hardly cause any discomfort to users, and can be combined with various sensors. Moreover, even if the new equipment is folded or bent, or in harsh environments such as high humidity, its performance will not be damaged. The researchers said that they successfully developed the nano grid organic field-effect transistor for the first time. The development of the transistor is crucial for building complex circuits.
