French Navy Expands the Scale of Unmanned Combat Platforms

2022-09-28

According to a recent report by the US Defense News, the French navy is now focusing on emerging technologies such as unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and laser weapons to deploy and form new combat effectiveness by 2030. In recent years, with the rapid development and application of artificial intelligence, unmanned aerial vehicles, laser weapons and other emerging technologies in the field of national defense and military, France has a strong interest in this. In 2019, the French navy proposed the development plan of unmanned operational platforms. Prazak, the then chief of staff of the French navy, said that the French navy would further expand the scope and number of unmanned systems in the next 10 years, and the scale was expected to expand 25 times. According to the plan, by 2030, the French navy will be equipped with more than 1200 unmanned operational platforms, including 900 UAVs, 50 unmanned surface ships, 200 unmanned submersibles, etc. The future goal is to achieve "each ship is equipped with UAV". In 2020, the French General Administration of Arms and Equipment signed a contract with Airbus worth 19.7 million euros (1 euro is about 7 yuan) to purchase 11 sets of "small shipborne UAV systems" and their maintenance support services. Each system includes two "Ariaca" UAVs. The UAV weighs 16 kg, can be launched by catapult, can stay in the air for 3 hours within a 50 km flight radius, and can undertake all-weather surveillance and reconnaissance missions. At the beginning of September this year, the first three sets of "small shipborne UAV systems" were delivered to the French navy. In the future, these UAV systems will be deployed on French naval frigates and patrol boats to enhance their air surveillance, detection and identification capabilities. In addition, the French Navy purchased S-100 UAVs from Austria Siebel Company and deployed them on northwest wind class amphibious attack ships. The UAV has the ability to fly day and night, can carry a variety of payloads, the maximum load is 50 kg, and can carry a 34 kg payload for more than 6 hours. At the same time, the S-100 UAV can rely on the satellite navigation system for automatic navigation, significantly improving the intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance capabilities of the Northwest class amphibious assault ship. At present, France is working with Germany and Spain to develop the "Future Air Combat System" project. The project includes the next generation of European fighter aircraft, European hollow long endurance UAV system, future cruise missile, bee swarm UAV, etc. After the successful development of the new generation fighter and UAV system, it is expected to become the carrier based fighter of France's "future aircraft carrier". The emerging technologies, such as unmanned aerial vehicles and laser weapons, which the French navy focuses on, will also play an important role in the "future aircraft carrier" plan.
