According to the official news of MediaTek, MediaTek took the lead in realizing the access of smartphones to 5g non terrestrial network (NTN) in the laboratory environment, setting a new 5g milestone. It is reported that MediaTek and Roeder cooperated with Schwartz to simulate the data transmission test to 5g base station (GNB) on the low orbit (LEO) satellite channel, and took the lead in demonstrating the satellite communication support capability based on 5g smart phone hardware. Officially, according to the functions and procedures defined in 3GPP R17 5g specification, this test uses the mobile communication test chip with 5g NR NTN satellite network function of MediaTek, together with the low orbit satellite channel simulator and test base station of Rhode and Schwartz, to simulate the low orbit (LEO) satellite with an altitude of 600 kilometers and a moving speed of 27000 kilometers per hour in the laboratory. In this experiment, MediaTek used the same components as smart phones, demonstrating the feasibility of using 5g NTN technology for satellite communication. 5g NTN technology improves the reliability of global services by making use of the scale economy effect of existing mobile communication networks, and helps users to obtain stable 5g connections in areas without services or with weak service signals. This technology can not only keep the number of 5g users growing, but also be applied to business and enterprise applications such as emergency communication, transportation, agriculture, fleet and heavy machinery management and Internet of things equipment.
