Wen Yiduo: marching forward with a heavy load

2022-08-19

On July 11, 1946, Li Gongpu, one of the seven gentlemen in the war of resistance against Japan, was assassinated in the streets of Kunming by Kuomintang agents. Four days later, Wen Yiduo delivered the "last speech" at the memorial meeting of Li Gongpu held at the Zhigong Hall of Yunnan University, denouncing the Kuomintang spies and calling for the magnificent mountains and rivers of new China; After the meeting, he was assassinated by Kuomintang agents in front of the teachers' dormitory of southwest United University. Wen Yiduo explained with his life what is the national integrity that is not afraid of violence and indomitable, and what is the character of a scholar who sacrifices his life for justice and regards death as his home. In my interviews with many students of southwest United University over the years, Wen Yiduo was one of the teachers they most often remembered. With their dedication and high standards of character, teachers give young people a kind of spiritual breast-feeding. Their influence penetrates the students' lives and will be unforgettable in the end. Wen Yiduo is a professor of literature. During the period of southwest United University, he succeeded Zhu Ziqing as the chairman of the Chinese Department of Tsinghua University, but his influence exceeded that of liberal arts; After his death, he became an unyielding "benchmarking figure" of a generation of scholars. The young tutor of the walking group met Lu Dili, an alumnus of southwest United University, when he was in Beijing. He told me about Wen Yiduo: "Mr. Wen is tall and big, and his eyes are very bright. He came from a distance and came with a heat." He recalled the time when the "walking group" moved westward to Kunming: Mr. Wen sang very well. Once, we walked into a cave and had to wear it out. It was cold and dark inside. Everyone was tired and in a bad mood. Suddenly, passionate songs rang out in the cave, like the wheels of a car rolling, rumbling. I was excited at once. Listening to the song, I walked out of the cave and saw a bright light in front of me. The song stopped. On the contrary, people felt that the cave was too short and wanted to hear the song. This reminds me of Gorky's Danke. When people are desperate in the dark, Danke takes out his burning heart to illuminate people's road. This is also the spirit praised by Wen Yiduo in the red candle: emitting light and heat for the dark world. The first contact between Wu Zhengyi, an alumnus of southwest United University, and Wen Yiduo began with the walking group: there were more than 200 students in the Hunan Guizhou Yunnan walking group, including 13 teachers. I remember that. There are about five or six famous professors, including Professor Wen Yiduo, Professor Li Jidong, Professor Zeng zhaolun, Professor Yuan Fuli, and Professor Huang Zijian. Others are teaching assistants and lecturers. Along the way, we especially saw Mr. Wen Yiduo sketching the scenery all the way. What shocked the hearts of teachers and students was the poverty and backwardness of the people at the bottom along the way: the southwest of China, especially Guizhou, was very poor at that time, the ethnic minorities were oppressed, and the cultural level was very low. There are basically no primary schools in many counties, and the best ones are only primary schools. The living conditions are very poor, and leprosy still exists in some places. Because of the difficulties in living and the poor sanitary conditions, what we saw along the way really made us see the actual situation in China for the first time from the "ivory tower", which had a great impact on our future ideological progress. It was during this trip that Mr. Wen began to really touch the pain and suffering of the people.
