"China's coffee capital" Pu'er, Yunnan: "small coffee" has embarked on the "exquisite route"

2022-08-15

In the rainy season, Pu'er, Yunnan Province, in the southwestern border of China, is rainy. In the morning, Liao Xiugui, 81, patrolled the coffee trees in the manor as usual to check the growth of the coffee fruit. Through the cultivation of generations of coffee farmers, Yunnan coffee has gradually embarked on the "refined route". Pu'er is located in the "world coffee planting golden belt" near the Tropic of cancer. It is the main coffee producing area in China. The coffee planting area, output and agricultural output value account for more than 98% of the country. Since the large-scale development of the coffee industry in the 1990s, Pu'er has become the main raw material production area of Nestle, Starbucks and other coffee giants in China. In nandaohe village, Simao District, Pu'er City, Yunnan Province, Liao Xiugui and his family run xiaoaozi coffee manor for three generations. As the first professional technician engaged in coffee planting and processing in Yunnan, he witnessed the development of coffee planting industry in Yunnan for more than 30 years. "The large-scale planting of coffee bears the expectation of coffee farmers for development and prosperity. Through learning advanced planting technology and manual fine management, the coffee output is gradually increased." Most of the coffee in Yunnan is Arabica, which is known as "Yunnan small grain coffee" in China, and the voice of Yunnan coffee is also "small". For a long time, Yunnan coffee has been defined as commercial coffee. Its variety, processing method and sales market are relatively single, and the quality of coffee is unstable. It is often used as the raw material of instant coffee. As it is difficult for Yunnan coffee farmers to have bargaining power, once the international coffee price drops, it will be difficult for coffee farmers to move forward. Yang Hongjian, the chief manager of the "post-90s generation" of yeyatang Valley manor in Pu'er, believes that in order to change the dilemma that "every kilogram of raw beans is not as expensive as a cup of fine coffee", the coffee industry in Yunnan needs to be reformed, from instant coffee raw materials to fine coffee industry. Now, Yang Hongjian is exploring and innovating the deep integration mode of "coffee tourism" in Pu'er. "I quit my job as a teacher and returned to my hometown to start a business. I set up a coffee volunteer platform. I hope that more people will come to China to study coffee and learn about the growth story of Yunnan coffee." He said. "China's coffee capital" is not made in a day. It is the joint efforts of the government, people in the industry, coffee farmers and consumers that Yunnan coffee has gone from being neglected to being industrialized, scaled and branded. Yunnan International Coffee Trading Center was established in 2014. Over the past eight years, it has focused on building the quality system standards of Yunnan coffee, creating online and offline trading modes, and holding several international coffee exhibitions and events, so as to integrate Yunnan coffee into the "circle of friends" of the world coffee. "At present, China's domestic coffee consumption market is growing rapidly. In 2021, China's coffee bean consumption will be more than 250000 tons, an increase of more than 25% over the previous year." Liu Haifeng, deputy general manager of Yunnan International Coffee Trading Center, said that the voice of Chinese coffee in the world has gradually increased. Liu Haifeng said that the coffee industry in Yunnan is becoming more and more specialized, and the rate of coffee beans has been greatly increased. In the future, the construction of Yunnan fine coffee industry will be gradually promoted through the improvement and transformation of coffee manor, the fine management and maintenance of coffee, and the research and development of advantageous products. He believes that with the opening of the China Laos railway and the completion of the construction of the Yunnan fine coffee processing park, Pu'er will have the opportunity to become the "first stop" of China's coffee import and processing to Southeast Asian countries. From unknown place to world-famous, in generations of coffee
