Permanent representative of China to the United Nations: China is deeply concerned about the attack on the zaborore nuclear power station

2022-08-12

Zhang Jun, permanent representative of China to the United Nations, said in a statement at the Security Council's meeting on the safety of nuclear facilities in Ukraine on the 11th that China attaches great importance to the safety and security of nuclear facilities in Ukraine and is deeply concerned about the recent attack on the zhaborze nuclear power station. Zhang Jun said that according to the information obtained by the International Atomic Energy Agency from the Ukrainian nuclear regulatory authority, the attack did not pose a direct threat to nuclear safety, and the radiation level was still at a normal level. However, the attack caused damage to the integrity of the facilities, safety and security system, power supply and personnel safety of the nuclear power plant, and sounded a "nuclear alarm" to the international community. Zhang Jun stressed that the safety and security of nuclear facilities should not be tried and error. Zaborore nuclear power station is one of the largest nuclear power stations in Europe. Once a large-scale nuclear accident occurs, it is feared that it will be more serious than the Fukushima nuclear accident. The Fukushima nuclear accident has caused a large amount of radioactive material leakage and the nuclear contaminated water has had a far-reaching impact on the marine environment, food safety and human health, which has aroused widespread concern and concern. China does not want the same risk to repeat itself. China calls on the parties concerned to exercise restraint, act prudently, avoid taking actions that endanger nuclear safety and security, and make every effort to reduce the occurrence of accidents. Zhang Jun said that China has always supported the IAEA to play an active role in promoting nuclear safety and security, and to perform its safeguards duties in strict accordance with its mandate. China notes that IAEA Director General Grossi and the IAEA expert team have been planning to visit the zaporo thermal nuclear power station, and UN Secretary General Guterres has also made an appeal for this. Russia is committed to providing necessary assistance for the visit. In a letter dated 9 August addressed to Grossi and Guterres, Ukraine stressed the growing need to organize visiting missions. China hopes that relevant obstacles can be removed as soon as possible so that the expert teams of Grossi and the International Atomic Energy Agency can make an early trip and carry out their work smoothly. Zhang Jun said that the crisis in Ukraine has lasted for more than five months, and the security risks posed by the conflict to nuclear facilities always exist. Only by promoting the cooling of the situation and restoring peace at an early date can we fundamentally eliminate the nuclear risk, reduce misjudgments and avoid accidents. China once again calls on all parties concerned to resume negotiations as soon as possible, find a solution to the Ukraine crisis in a calm and rational manner, address each other's legitimate security concerns, build a balanced, effective and sustainable security architecture, and achieve common security. China has always stood for abiding by the purposes and principles of the UN Charter and respecting national sovereignty and territorial integrity. China calls on all parties in the international community to promote the proper resolution of the crisis in a responsible manner, increase political and diplomatic efforts, and create conditions for the parties to return to negotiations. China will continue to play a constructive role in this regard. As the rotating president of the Security Council this month, Zhang Jun presided over the deliberations on the 11th. (news agency)
