Intel announced that it would provide chip foundry services for MediaTek, using a 16 nanometer process

2022-07-26

On July 25, Intel and MediaTek today announced the establishment of a strategic partnership. In the future, MediaTek will use the 16 nanometer process (Intel 16) of Intel foundry services (IFS) to manufacture chips, which is an improved version of 22ffl (a traditional process optimized for low-power devices) nodes. The agreement aims to enable MediaTek to establish a more balanced and flexible supply chain by using Intel's large capacity. Randhir thakur, President of Intel OEM services, said, "as one of the world's leading chip design companies, MediaTek will help Intel OEM services enter the next stage of rapid growth. At the same time, the advanced technology and large capacity of Intel OEM services will help MediaTek produce more chips". NS Tsai, senior vice president of MediaTek platform technology and manufacturing operations, said, "MediaTek has always adopted a multi-source strategy. The expansion of Intel OEM service capacity will help MediaTek create a more diversified supply chain. We look forward to establishing a long-term cooperative relationship with Intel to meet the rapidly growing needs of global customers.". Before, MediaTek produced more than 2billion devices per year, but it is not clear how many devices Intel's foundry can produce in the future. And Intel did not explain the production proportion of MediaTek in the United States or Europe. The smart edge devices that MediaTek plans to produce are very consistent with Intel's 16 nanometer process, which is an improved version of Intel's 22ffl node and began shipping as early as 2018. In addition, the chips produced by this process still have high performance, which is enough for most products. In order to reverse the decline of Intel OEM services over the years and provide OEM services to MediaTek, Intel has invested $20billion in Intel OEM services. At present, Intel OEM services have a good momentum of development, such as signing Qualcomm and Amazon Web services (AWS) as initial customers. Intel CEO pat Gelsinger launched Intel wafer foundry business in March 2021. The business aims to revitalize the company's market position and have greater influence in the global chip manufacturing field. However, Intel's wafer foundry business brought only $283million (about 1.9 billion yuan) in revenue in the first quarter of this year. For reference, TSMC and Samsung had $17.5 billion (about 117.6 billion yuan) and $5.3 billion (about 35.6 billion yuan) in revenue in the first quarter of this year, respectively. In order to establish a wafer foundry business that can compete with Samsung and TSMC, Intel is actively hiring executives and senior employees from competitors such as Samsung and TSMC.
