New method to make eggs produce covid-19 antibody

2022-07-18

According to the physicist organization network reported on the 13th, American researchers used a new method to make the eggs laid by hens produce antibodies against the spike protein of novel coronavirus. Studies have shown that the antibodies extracted from eggs are expected to be used to treat COVID-19 or as a preventive measure for people who are prone to contact the virus. The relevant research was published in the latest issue of the journal virus. Rodrigo Gallardo, the head of the study and professor of poultry medicine in the Department of population health and reproduction at the University of California Davis veterinary college, said: "the advantage of this system is that it can produce a large number of antibodies in birds. The cost of producing these antibodies in hens is low, and by using updated antigens to super immunize hens, the antibodies can be updated very quickly, so as to deal with the variant strain of novel coronavirus." Birds can produce an antibody called IgY, similar to IgG in humans and other mammals. When injected into the human body, IgY will not cause allergy, but trigger an immune response. IgY is present in the serum and eggs of birds. Gallardo said that a hen lays 300 eggs a year, we can get a lot of IgY. Gallardo and his colleagues immunized the hens with two doses of three different vaccines based on the spike protein or receptor binding domain of covid-19. Three and six weeks after the last immunization, the antibodies in the hens' blood samples and egg yolks were measured. Scientists from the National Center for biological defense and infectious diseases at George Mason University tested the ability of the purified antibody to block coronavirus infection of human cells. The results showed that the eggs and serum of immunized chickens contained antibodies that could recognize covid-19. Gallardo explained that antibodies from serum are more effective in neutralizing viruses, probably because there are more antibodies in the blood in general. Gallardo is working with scientists from Stanford University and Sydney University of technology to develop egg based antibody technology. The team hopes to use these antibodies for preventive treatment, such as sprays, for high-risk groups that are easy to come into contact with novel coronavirus. (outlook new era)
