Wangyi: the one China principle is the anchor of stability in the Taiwan Strait

2022-07-12

On July 11, State Councilor and foreign minister Wangyi delivered a policy speech and answered questions at the ASEAN Secretariat on upholding open regionalism. In response to a reporter's question about the root causes of the current tension in the Taiwan Strait and how to maintain peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait, Wang Yi stressed that the one China principle is the sea god needle for stability in the Taiwan Strait. Wangyi said that history and practice have repeatedly proved that when the one China principle is fully recognized and seriously followed, the Taiwan Strait will remain calm and peaceful development can be achieved across the Strait; When the one China principle is wantonly challenged or even destroyed, the Taiwan Strait will be covered with clouds and even violent storms. Wangyi said that the root cause of the current tension in the Taiwan Strait is that the Taiwan Democratic Progressive Party authorities have abandoned the "1992 consensus" that embodies the one China principle, destroyed the important foundation for the peaceful development of cross-strait relations, and are still going further and further on the evil road of "relying on foreign countries for independence". At the same time, it must be pointed out that the United States is constantly distorting and hollowing out the one China policy in an attempt to play the "Taiwan card" and interfere with and hinder China's development process. Wangyi said that now we are all talking about maintaining the "status quo". What is the "status quo" of the Taiwan issue? The facts are clear and plain. That is, both sides of the Strait belong to one China, and Taiwan is part of China's territory. Although the two sides have long been politically opposed, China's national sovereignty and territorial integrity have never been divided. This is the real status quo of the Taiwan Strait issue, which has not changed and will not change since ancient times. What challenges and destroys this status quo is precisely the DPP authorities who advocate independence, and it is precisely the external forces trying to "use Taiwan to contain China". Wangyi stressed that the Taiwan issue is the core of China's core interests, and it is the unshirkable responsibility of every Chinese descendant to safeguard China's sovereignty and territorial integrity. No one, no force, no country should fantasize about separating Taiwan from China. Wangyi pointed out that the one China principle is also the basic principle for China to establish diplomatic relations with other countries and constitutes an integral part of the post World War II international order. I hope and believe that all countries can fully recognize the serious harm of "Taiwan independence" secession and jointly safeguard the one China principle with China. The clearer the attitude of upholding the one China principle and the more powerful the measures to contain the separatist forces, the more likely peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait will be and the more guaranteed peace and prosperity in the region will be. Wangyi said that the United States has repeatedly stressed the need to safeguard the sovereignty and territorial integrity of every country. Considering the past record of the United States, we attach importance to this statement of the United States, because it is in line with the basic norms of international relations and the purposes of the United Nations Charter. However, it must be emphasized that the United States cannot practice double standards, go back on its word, and turn things around. China's sovereignty and territorial integrity on the Taiwan issue should also be respected and safeguarded, which is also a test of the international credibility of the United States, a great power.
