Successful completion of the first domestic animal experiment of an interposing brain computer interface

On June 25, China successfully completed the animal experiment of the first domestic interposing brain computer interface independently developed in China in Beijing. The interposing brain computer interface of this test was led by duanfeng, Professor of the school of artificial intelligence of Nankai University, and jointly developed with Shanghai Xinwei Medical Technology Co., Ltd. This test is the first time to realize the interposing brain computer interface in sheep brain in China. It has broken through the core technologies such as interposing EEG electrodes and intravascular EEG acquisition, completed the development of nerve intervention devices such as stents and catheters, solved the disadvantages of irreversible damage caused by the traditional invasive brain computer interface to the brain area, filled the gap in the field of interposing brain computer interface in China, and is of great significance to promote the development of brain science in China. Traditional BCI can be divided into invasive BCI and non-invasive BCI. Invasive brain computer interface needs to implant EEG sensors into the brain through craniotomy or drilling through the skull, which may lead to long-term inflammation of the patient's brain. Although the non-invasive brain computer interface does no harm to people, the EEG signal is weak, and the recognition accuracy and real-time performance are limited. The intrusive brain computer interface technology developed under the leadership of Duan Feng's team can realize brain computer connection only through minimally invasive surgery similar to heart bypass. The team adopted the nerve intervention technology for stroke treatment. After the EEG sensor was implanted into the cerebral motor cortex, visual cortex and other brain regions through the vein, the nerve scaffold expanded and the electrode was pressed on the blood vessel wall close to the brain, so as to obtain the signals of the corresponding brain regions. The biggest advantage of this technique is that EEG signals can be obtained without skull drilling or craniotomy, and the whole surgical implantation process can be completed within two hours. The brain electrode implantation in this experiment was assisted by the interventional robot developed by Professor zhangjianhua of Hebei University of technology. The robot adopts master-slave operation mode, and is operated by mayongjie, chief physician of Neurosurgery Department of Xuanwu Hospital of Capital Medical University at the master end. Some angiography has been successfully completed. Finally, the sensor was implanted into the sheep cerebral vessels, and the EEG signals were successfully collected. The interventional brain machine experimental research carried out in the animal brain is of great significance in improving the functional independence of patients with severe paralysis caused by brain, spinal cord, peripheral nerve or muscle dysfunction, and in the treatment of epilepsy, sleep disorders, Parkinson's disease and other diseases. It has a broad market prospect in the future. It is reported that the success of this test marks that China has reached the international advanced level in the field of brain computer interface and interventional robot research.
