The researchers called 26 healthy people and asked them to take two tests, one for a 10 minute run with 50% maximum oxygen uptake on the treadmill and the other for a rest within a specified time to calm their emotions. The researchers used professional tools to monitor their brain executive function and emotional management, before and after running and before and after rest. Hideaki soya, a professor of neuroendocrinology at the University of Tsukuba in Japan and the lead author of the study, said the results showed that running had obvious effects in promoting executive function and emotional management. This may be related to an area of the brain called the bilateral prefrontal cortex, which plays an important role in executive function and emotion management. Running can stimulate this area and may lead to changes in neurotransmitters such as norepinephrine, acetylcholine and dopamine.
