Antarctic icebergs may be more vulnerable in the future

2022-04-19

According to a study recently published in the journal communication, earth and environment, 60% of the iceberg collapse events (which will form new icebergs) on the Larsen ice shelf of the Antarctic peninsula between 2000 and 2020 were caused by extreme atmospheric conditions. The study believes that under the prediction of future warming, the same process may put Larsen C ice shelf at risk of collapse. The collapse of the Antarctic ice shelf is believed to have accelerated the loss of continental ice and contributed to the rise of sea level. "Atmospheric River" is a narrow band of high humidity, which moves like a river in the atmosphere. These "currents" originated in subtropical or middle latitudes, which will lead to heat waves, sea ice melting and ocean surges, which will lead to iceberg disintegration and ice shelf collapse. In recent decades, Larsen A and Larsen B ice shelves on the Antarctic Peninsula collapsed sharply in 1995 and 2002, respectively. These events are believed to be related to melting ice and ocean wave related pressure caused by storms. In order to clarify the impact of atmospheric rivers on the Antarctic ice shelf, Jonathan willer, a scientist at the University of Grenoble and the French National Center for scientific research, and his colleagues identified 21 Larsen ice shelf collapses and collapses between 2000 and 2020. Using an atmospheric River detection algorithm, they found that 13 of the 21 collapses and collapses had strong atmospheric River landings in the previous five days. The research team believes that the future ice sheet stability model needs to include extreme conditions of short-term atmospheric behavior, rather than relying solely on average conditions.
