European style historical and cultural relic architecture - Dame Church in Lude, Shamian

2022-04-04

Located at No. 14, Shamian street, Guangzhou, the church was originally established by the members of the French Consulate in Guangzhou to live a religious life. It was founded in the 16th year of Guangxu (1890), covering an area of 839.75 square meters. It is named for the construction of a mount of Notre Dame in the south of the church garden and the placement of the statue of the virgin of Lude. In November 1996, Guangzhou Shamian building complex was identified as a national key cultural relics protection unit by the State Council, and Lude Notre Dame church is one of the buildings. Before the founding of the people's Republic of China, most of its priests were foreign missionaries, and few Chinese priests served here. On the eve of the founding of the people's Republic of China, Chinese priest Chen Huimin served as priest. After 1951, father Lin Bingliang became a priest of our church. On December 8, 1982, it was reopened after repair, and father Liu Lingsi served as priest. Lude Catholic Church of Notre Dame is a building in the French concession, formerly known as the Shamian Catholic Church. It is named for the original construction of a mount of Notre Dame in the south of the church garden and the placement of the statue of Lude Notre Dame. The church is located at the northeast corner of the junction of Shamian street and Shamian 1st Street. It is composed of lobby, priest building, nun building and Mt. Notre Dame. The lobby is in front, the priest building is in the back by East, the nun building is in the back by west, and Mt. Notre Dame is in the east of the lobby. There are two auxiliary buildings, one is a two-story building and the other is a bungalow. The church is basically well preserved. The spires of the main doors and windows of the facade and the small spires at the four corners of the tower, the complex daylighting windows and ridges on the octagonal spire, as well as the continuous small pointed arches and the buttresses pollinated from top to bottom also reflect the mysterious and yearning characteristics of the Catholic Church for "heaven". The Catholic story of the virgin of Ruth is also full of legend. It is said that in 1858, the virgin appeared to Bernard, a poor girl, in a small town in the Pyrenees Mountains in southern France. She told him to read the rose Sutra, pray for sinners, and make a spring flow out of the mountains to treat patients. From then on, the virgin used the Holy water of Ruth to treat many serious and incurable diseases in body, spirit and soul. Bernard asked her who she was, and she replied, "I am a virgin without original sin." The Notre Dame Church in Shamian Lude has a history of more than 130 years. It was completely repaired in 2010, including Notre Dame mountain, water supply and drainage, power supply system, courtyard garden construction, church, priest building, fire control system and technical supervision system. The total maintenance budget is more than 7 million yuan. At present, when you enter the Lude Notre Dame hall in the sand, it is bright, classical and elegant. When the sun shines through the colorful glass, the light and shadow are staggered, which is more transparent and clean. As a classic Gothic Catholic architecture and a European historical relic, the Church of Notre Dame is worth visiting when you are free. (Xinhua News Agency)
