"The sixth mass extinction" cannot be just a repetition of the old tune

2022-03-01

It is reported that some scientists believe that human activities are leading the earth to enter the "sixth biological extinction". Robert coy's research team, a professor at the Pacific bioscience research center of the University of Hawaii, recently released a report, which supports the hypothesis of "the sixth mass extinction" by counting the extinction rates of terrestrial snails and slugs, and believes that "the sixth mass extinction has begun on land and seems to be more and more likely to occur in fresh water". The data infer that 7.5% to 13% of species may have been extinct since 1500. "The sixth mass extinction" is not a new topic. In 2014, Ecologist Huang Chengming has written "the sixth extinction of species" into the popular science book "endangered animals" produced by the National Animal Museum of China: "since 1600, 724 species of recorded higher animals and plants have been extinct. The vast majority of species have been extinct before human beings know it. The earth is experiencing the sixth extinction of organisms mainly due to human destruction of the environment." In recent years, scientists from all over the world have demonstrated this concept from different angles and issued warnings again and again. For the "mass extinction" of the earth, some people think it is "sensational". However, based on the experience and lessons of history and the pain of environmental pollution, we would rather believe it than not. Such a "repetition of the old tune" must not be taken lightly. As we all know, there are many reasons for the mass extinction, such as the impact of extraterrestrial stars on the earth, volcanic activity, sudden climate change, sea-level rise and fall, the change of atmospheric oxygen content and so on. The previous mass extinction is basically the result of natural action, and the possible "sixth mass extinction" is closely related to the serious damage to the ecological environment caused by human activities. Of course, what scientists call "mass extinction" is not completely unalterable. As one of the first parties to sign and ratify the Convention on biological diversity, China has always attached great importance to biodiversity protection. Now it has embarked on a path of biodiversity protection with Chinese characteristics and provided a Chinese scheme for the world. Although it has become a broad consensus to strengthen environmental protection, it often stays at the verbal level on many occasions, and some individuals or institutions do not really go into their minds and take action. This not only exists in some commercial institutions, but also closely related to people's living habits. For example, when parking and waiting, some drivers idle for a long time and sit in the car while enjoying the air conditioner and brushing their mobile phones. For the exhaust emission problem of idle parking, the research experts of the environmental protection organization "natural University" once selected a Volkswagen Golf 6 for test and detection. The results show that although the PM2 produced by parking without flameout in general It doesn't seem obvious, but because idling parking will continue to burn fuel and emit exhaust, the cumulative effect on the air can't be underestimated. Moreover, according to the rough calculation of the experimental data, it is found that the accumulated PM2 of tail gas emission will be reduced when the engine is not shut down for 3 minutes 5 at least twice as much as the emission at ignition. For this reason, in order to effectively reduce exhaust emissions, it is necessary to turn off the engine when parking for more than 3 minutes. Zhuhai, Beijing, Nanjing, Wuhan and other cities have successively issued laws and regulations on air pollution prevention and control. It is required that the motor vehicle driver should turn off the engine when parking for more than 3 minutes in the section that does not affect the normal driving of the vehicle. In particular, the bus with high driving rate and serious phenomenon of parking without turning off is required to take the lead. In fact, idling parking is by no means a matter of a few dollars. The behavior of seeking temporary convenience is related to environmental protection. "Protect the environment, start with me" is not an empty slogan. To fear nature, protect nature and build an earth home with harmonious coexistence between man and nature, we need to be highly vigilant against issues such as "human activities have led the earth to enter the 'sixth biological extinction'", and we need the joint actions of you, me and him in the fields of energy conservation and environmental protection.
