Interview with the restoration designer of Deshou palace in the Southern Song Dynasty in Hangzhou: the most difficult thing is the details

2022-01-19

"During the Southern Song Dynasty, Emperor Xiaozong met supreme Emperor Gaozong at Deshou palace. Did he stand or sit? How many chairs were placed at the scene?" On January 18, Huang Zi, the design host of Deshou Palace site protection and exhibition project and Southern Song Dynasty Museum (phase I) and former president of Zhejiang ancient architecture design and Research Institute, said in an interview with China news agency that at present, the most difficult thing to display the architectural restoration logo of Deshou Palace is the restoration design of historical details and scene layout in the hall. During the Southern Song Dynasty, the Deshou palace in Hangzhou, also known as "Beinei", was the palace where song Gaozong and song Xiaozong lived after abdication. Deshou Palace site is not only a rare site of the Southern Song Dynasty in China after systematic archaeology, complete disclosure and in-depth research, but also the only site integrating royal palace and Jiangnan gardens. As a famous historical and cultural city and one of the seven ancient capitals, but on the important time section of the "Southern Song Dynasty", Hangzhou, Zhejiang, has long lacked a representative architectural landscape for viewing. As the first large-scale display of the history and culture of the Southern Song Dynasty in Hangzhou, Deshou palace will show the most authentic song rhyme culture to citizens and tourists through site exhibition, architectural restoration and digital display. It will also become the largest centralized display of the history and culture of the Southern Song Dynasty in China. The reporter walked into the construction site of Deshou palace. At present, the upper beam of the main hall and the steel structure protection shed are fully covered. The land area of the project is 21367 square meters, the building height is 18.6 meters, and the total building area is 12321 square meters. The overall architectural layout is based on the original pattern of Deshou palace inferred from comprehensive literature and archaeology, and continues the pattern of "south palace and North Garden" of Deshou palace. It mainly shows the juxtaposition characteristics of the two palaces of Deshou palace through two groups of main buildings: the central protection hall shed and the western protection hall shed. Cement reinforcement is rarely seen on the construction site. On the contrary, wood products with different diameters and shapes fluctuate like mountains: luodou, Jinzhu, hump, Mingyue beam, Huagong According to Huang Zi, the architectural restoration logo display of Deshou palace is mainly based on the construction French style of the Song Dynasty, with reference to song paintings and a few buildings of the Song Dynasty. Different from the reconstruction of other sites, the Deshou palace project is highly comprehensive. It requires not only protection, but also engineering, restoration and exhibition, and covers many types of work. Many building components are finalized after repeated drawing and modification by the design team and repeated review and modification on site after proofing. It's not ideal to customize a tile several times. Finally, it's demoulded with the original tile of Deshou palace discovered. However, Huang Zi believes that the most difficult thing is the details. The restoration design of the scene layout in the palace, such as rolling brake, material and color of columns, caisson pattern, number and placement of chairs, etc. It is reported that most of the existing Dougong wood of the song tower is Castanopsis eyrei, but at present, China can no longer guarantee the supply. Therefore, combined with the characteristics of wood, teak is finally selected as the main material. Huang Zi said that teak has a clear spirit. Its color is elegant and its grain is straight, which is more in line with the literati temperament of the Song Dynasty. After deciding to choose teak, the design team went to Jingci temple, where teak was used as the wood structure during the same restoration. Through field comparison, the design team reduced the column diameter of Deshou Palace by 3cm, making it closer to the slender stretch of song style. The design team went to Baoguo temple in Ningbo for many times to pursue details and ponder the running in between wood and wood. At the same time, combined with the construction of French style in the Song Dynasty, in order to restore the appearance of the Southern Song Dynasty to the greatest extent. In the near future, Huang Zi's team will focus on the scene layout design in the grand hall. In a few months, this beautiful palace that has been silent underground for hundreds of years will reappear in the Jianghu, and the world will see the unique charm of elegant, handsome, interesting and soft Song Yun culture again.
