Basic research is an important guarantee for national innovation ability. China has always attached importance to the training of basic research talents in the stage of higher education. Since 1978, it has piloted "youth classes" in some colleges and universities. In recent years, it has implemented talent policies such as "Everest plan" and "strong foundation plan", and has made some achievements. Basic disciplines have the characteristics of strong theory, high degree of abstraction and far away from production practice. Accordingly, the training cycle of basic research talents is long and the results are slow, which affects the training enthusiasm of enterprises or scientific research institutes. Therefore, when carrying out the talent plan of basic disciplines, the state mainly relies on Colleges and universities, especially the "double first-class" colleges and universities with strong basic discipline strength and relatively loose academic environment. "Double first-class" colleges and universities should shoulder the important task of training the main force of basic research talents and do a good job in all links. The training objectives must highlight national interests. The starting point of training basic research talents is to solve the talent gap of national scientific and technological innovation. It is a plan based on national interests and social benefits. Therefore, when positioning the training goal of basic research talents, the "double first-class" universities should abandon the employment orientation and market orientation, strengthen the education of family and country feelings and social responsibility, so that those talents with solid foundation and keen on basic research can truly take root in China and serve the national development. The selection criteria should emphasize intrinsic motivation and creative thinking. Selection is the first step in talent training. Not everyone is suitable for basic research. If the selection of basic research talents is still based on the classification of disciplines and the results of standardized examinations, some "atypical talents" with creative thinking will often be missed, or the selected students are not keen on basic research. Therefore, the "double first-class" colleges and universities should appropriately reduce the examination performance requirements of selection, strengthen comprehensive evaluation and independent selection, adopt flexible exit mechanism, provide multiple selection opportunities, and continuously observe and select students with internal motivation and creative thinking. The training program should be more specific and targeted. Basic research has its own characteristics, and there are also unique requirements for cultivating basic research talents. "Double first-class" colleges and universities should closely focus on the requirements and laws of basic research.
