Recently, a new study of more than 5500 adult e-cigarette users found that the use of e-cigarettes is associated with a high prevalence of brittle fractures. E-cigarettes may be harmful to bone health, even young people. The results were published in the American Open Journal of Medicine on the 22nd. Brittle fractures are defined as fractures of the hip, spine, or wrist caused by minor trauma, such as falling from a standing height or lower. Since its introduction, e-cigarettes have been sold in the market as a healthier substitute and smoking cessation aid than traditional cigarettes. It contains propylene glycol, vegetable glycerin and different levels of nicotine and additives, which will produce fragrant steam. This time, investigators from the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center conducted a horizontal analysis of the data of the American health and nutrition survey from 2017 to 2018. They conducted a sample survey of more than 5500 American adult men and women to study the relationship between e-cigarette use and brittle fractures. The results showed that compared with those who did not smoke e-cigarettes, e-cigarette users had a higher prevalence of brittle fractures. The researchers also found that people who smoked both traditional cigarettes and electronic cigarettes had a higher prevalence of brittle fractures than those who smoked only traditional cigarettes. Studies have shown that young e-cigarette users may increase the risk of osteoporotic fractures over time. Therefore, the investigators suggested that medical institutions should consider e-cigarette as a potential risk factor for brittle fracture, and suggested that the fracture risk should be included in the medical insurance related to e-cigarette. The researchers said this is the first time to investigate the relationship between e-cigarette use and brittle fractures. This finding provides data for researchers, medical policymakers and tobacco regulators to understand the potential link between the use of e-cigarettes and the decline of bone health. Previously, some observational studies have reported the relationship between e-cigarette and various diseases, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, coronary heart disease and depression.
