H5n8 virus is rampant all over the world. Why are Chinese poultry "alone"

2021-11-08

On November 7, the reporter learned from Harbin Veterinary Institute of Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences that the latest research by academician Chen Hualan's team found that the h5n8 subtype avian influenza virus with great lethality to the poultry industry was introduced into China through swans at the end of last year and the beginning of this year, but it did not cause an outbreak of avian influenza in China. The relevant research results were recently published online in the Chinese Journal of Life Sciences (English version) under the title of "temporal and spatial transmission, biological characteristics and protective effect of vaccines currently used in China of h5n8 subtype avian influenza virus". Since 2020, h5n8 virus has caused nearly 2800 outbreaks of poultry and wild birds in more than 20 countries in Europe and Asia, resulting in the death or culling of more than 33 million poultry, causing huge economic losses to the global poultry industry. In order to scientifically prevent and control the h5n8 avian influenza epidemic, academician Chen Hualan's team carried out research on it. The team collected and analyzed 41172 poultry swab samples and 317 wild bird samples from September 2020 to June 2021, and isolated 36 strains of h5n8 virus, including 22 strains from wild birds and 14 strains from ducks and geese. These viruses are divided into two gene types. It is found that the first type of virus was introduced into China from swan in January 2021; The second type of virus was introduced into China from swans in October 2020, and then spread to 16 species of wild birds and ducks and geese in some areas. It was found that these viruses were highly lethal to chickens, mild to ducks and different in virulence to mice. More importantly, chickens and ducks routinely immunized in China's poultry farms can completely resist the attack of h5n8 virus, which explains why Chinese poultry can be "alone" when h5n8 virus is rampant all over the world. As h5n8 virus widely existing in wild birds will pose a continuous threat to poultry and public health, this study strongly calls on high-risk countries to immunize poultry with H5 vaccine, effectively block the transmission of virus from wild birds to poultry and protect human life and health.
