Walk into Baoguo temple in Ningbo and feel the charm of ancient architecture

2021-11-04

Recently, the Baoguo Temple ancient architecture museum, located at the foot of Lingshan mountain, Jiangbei District, Ningbo City, Zhejiang Province, welcomed nearly 300 primary school teachers and students and opened the first ancient construction and research activity of "I am the guardian of small national treasures" this autumn. Under the guidance of the museum counselors, the teachers and students enjoyed the ever-changing bucket arches, exquisite caisson, marvelous columns, and listened to the story behind the millennium old ancient architecture - the hall of the Northern Song Dynasty. In the youth research class, every four students worked in groups to polish the wooden strips, splice and assemble them, and jointly built the bucket arch model. In Baoguo temple, which has a history of thousands of years, children experience the charm of Chinese traditional ancient architecture through personal practice. Baoguo temple, known as "a unique place in the south of the Yangtze River", was built in the Eastern Han Dynasty, formerly known as Lingshan temple. It was destroyed in the Tang Dynasty and later rebuilt and named Baoguo temple. The hall of Baoguo temple, rebuilt in the sixth year of Dazhong Xiangfu of the Northern Song Dynasty (1013), is still standing tall despite the vicissitudes of thousands of years. What makes Baoguo Temple famous is its exquisite construction skills. The wooden structure of the whole hall does not use a rivet, but depends on the ingenious bucket arch and accurate tenon and mortise connection to support the whole huge roof, which is staggered and close to each other like fish scales. This skill is 90 years earlier than the French style. In 1961, Baoguo temple was announced as the first batch of national key cultural relics protection units by the State Council. The hall of Baoguo temple is not only a representative work of Chinese wood construction technology in the 11th century, but also an important example of the spread of Chinese architectural technology overseas through the "maritime Silk Road". "As an important departure port of the 'maritime Silk Road', Ningbo had frequent trade, personnel and religious and cultural exchanges with Japan and other countries during the song and Yuan Dynasties, and Ningbo's architectural skills also spread abroad. Baoguo temple is the best preserved material evidence that can best reflect this history." Xu Xuemin, vice president of Tianyige Museum (Baoguo Temple Ancient Architecture Museum), said. Ningbo was called Mingzhou in the Tang Dynasty. In the first year of Changqing of Tang Dynasty (821), Mingzhou Prefecture moved to Sanjiangkou and built an inner city, marking the beginning of the construction of Ningbo. During the song and Yuan Dynasties, Ningbo became an important hub of the maritime Silk Road, and the Buddhist temple buildings in Ningbo also had an important impact on the Buddhist buildings in Japan and South Korea. As the only existing physical remains of this period, the hall of Baoguo temple has great similarities in architectural style, beam frame structure and detail decoration compared with the Japanese wooden architectural heritage of the same period. "Local craftsmen in Mingzhou even directly participated in the construction of Japanese temples, such as the Dongda temple in Nara, Japan," Xu Xuemin said. Today, the Baoguo Temple Museum of ancient architecture provides the younger generation with an in-depth understanding of traditional ancient architecture culture through a series of characteristic research courses. "Since 2014, we have built a research and learning base and developed a complete set of research and learning courses." Zhang Luyi, a staff member of the museum, introduced that in order to make students have a better sense of experience, the museum has opened courses in spring, summer, autumn and winter. There are dozens of courses, including small wooden stools with tenon and mortise structure, shaving lamps and Kong mingsuo... In the process of students' hands-on, You can also experience the beauty of wooden architecture and the craftsman spirit. In 2016, the museum cooperated with Tongji University and other universities to launch the ancient construction research camp. "We let students at home and abroad learn ancient architecture courses in ancient architecture and get a different experience by immersing themselves," Zhang Luyi said. In 2018, Baoguosi ancient architecture museum base was selected as the national research and practice education base for primary and secondary school students. The course "journey of ancient architecture culture" won the top 100 excellent teaching cases of national museums. It is the only museum in Zhejiang province that includes two national honors.
