The Electoral Affairs Office of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region government announced on the 30th that the nomination period for the election of the seventh Legislative Council of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region began on the 30th, and a total of 15 nomination forms were received by the returning officers of 10 geographical constituencies, 28 functional constituencies and the election Committee Constituency on the first day. The election of the seventh Legislative Council of the HKSAR will be held on December 19. A total of 90 members will be elected from 20 geographical constituencies, 30 functional constituencies and 40 election committee constituencies. The nomination period for the election of the seventh Legislative Council began on 30 November and ended on 12 November. The Electoral Affairs Commission has appointed returning officers for 10 geographical constituencies, 28 functional constituencies and the election committee constituency to handle nomination forms and other election matters. Nominees must personally submit the completed nomination form and election deposit to the relevant Returning Officer from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. from Monday to Friday and from 9 a.m. to 12 noon on Saturday during the nomination period. The term of office of the sixth Legislative Council of the HKSAR originally expired on September 30, 2020. Due to the severe epidemic situation in Hong Kong at that time, the HKSAR government decided to postpone the election of the seventh Legislative Council for one year on July 31 last year. Subsequently, the 21st Meeting of the Standing Committee of the 13th National People's Congress voted on August 11 last year to pass a decision on the continued performance of duties by the sixth Legislative Council of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, so as to solve the problem of vacancies in the legislature caused by the postponement of the election of the Legislative Council. The sixth Legislative Council of the HKSAR shall continue to perform its duties for not less than one year until the beginning of the term of office of the seventh Legislative Council.
